The postcard

(This comes from Day 3 of the book. The title they gave was Far, Far Away)

The postcard arrived unexpectedly on a Tuesday. Did I have any friends on vacation right now? It was obvious that it was purchased from one of those gift shops that you can find in every single tourist area in every single country in the world. You inevitably have to go in because you forgot water or you get caught in the rain and you need to buy an overpriced umbrella. The postcards are always by the cash register and you think to yourself, “This is a lightweight, inexpensive souvenir that I can get for a few people. I'll write them out while I'm here and mail them when I get home to make sure they don't get lost", so you grab a couple along with the umbrella and some mints in a funny tin. This postcard has photos of Niagara Falls, the CN Tower, the parliament building, the Big Nickel, and the Big Canada Goose from Wawa on the front all framed in yellow with a bright blue background. The word Ontario is written in red cursive across the top. Odd. Why is someone sending me a postcard from here?

When I turn it around I recognize the handwriting right away. It says...

I should have said this long ago.

I think about you all the time.

Thank you for loving me despite myself.

I loved you more than I was willing to admit.
